Interview with Daphne Carmeli

Palo Alto, CA - October, 2005

Daphne Carmeli
co-founder, president and CEO of Metreo

“I started playing the piano when I was four. I couldn’t even reach the pedals yet — they had to put a bench out for me!” Daphne Carmeli reminisces. Her discipline and competitive spirit served her well; she won an opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall when she was only 16.

Carmeli took that same unwavering drive and perseverance with her to meet other objectives, such as graduating Magna Cum Laude from Brandeis University with a BS in Mathematics and obtaining an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University.

“I have to continue to challenge myself, to always surpass my goals,” insists Carmeli. Most recently she was Vice President of Marketing at Netscape/America Online (AOL), where she played a key role in repositioning and revitalizing Netscape from a browser company into an enterprise software company, driving efforts that grew the E-Commerce Application division from $5M to over $70M in merely 18 months.

Carmeli is now President and CEO of Metreo, which has created price optimization software for the manufacturing and distribution industries. Touted as one of the foremost companies in its field, Metreo has grown by leaps and bounds — 300 percent consistently over the past two years — due to Carmeli’s leadership and vision.

What’s the most important thing you learned in school — or in the “school of hard knocks?”
Learn from the past; don’t dwell on it. Look forward; not backwards. In other words: Don’t play with dead snakes!

Favorite quotation
My favorite quotation is from my Dad: “When you least expect it; expect it.”

Achievement most proud of
The Metreo story is the achievement I am most proud of. From the inception to the creation and the execution, we not only successfully achieved our goals, we made a mark while doing so.
